The last day to get Workshop rates at the Red Rock is August 4. After that, one of two things will happen. The first is we can’t guarantee you’ll get a room. The second is if you do get a room, it almost certainly will be at a higher rate than our negotiated rate of $179.99 per night.

There are still rooms available for the Sunday, Monday, Tuesday nights of the Workshop. However, the Friday and Saturday nights prior to the Workshop are sold out.

With the exception of the day-long student workshop and Multimedia Quick Course, regular Workshop sessions begin at 3 p.m. Sunday. Most people in the U.S., because of the Pacific time zone we’re in, can arrive in time to get to the hotel and make the first session.

However, if you need to be here earlier, please contact site chair Bill Gaspard at bill.gaspard@lasvegassun.com. There may be some cancellations of Saturday night rooms or the freeing up of some Friday and Saturday rooms from the APME room block. He can also advise on the closest alternate hotels for those nights.

Start [here](http://www.sndvegas.com/practical/reserve-hotel/) to reserve your room at Red Rock.

Coming aboard to join our already excellent line up (internships at The Boston Globe, The St. Petersburg Times, Arizona Republic, Dallas Morning News and Hartford Courant; fellowships at The Poynter Institute) is Creative Circle Media Consulting.

Based in Providence and run by Quick Course pioneer Bill Ostendorf, this internship offers a very different and cool opportunity. Creative Circle works on print and web design projects and has a sister company which designs software.

Ostendorf tells us, “I’m willing to do a print or web design internship or a combination of both. The intern would work here in Providence under my direct supervision. If they worked on print designs, they would travel to client sites. If they worked on web designs, they might work for the software company as well as the consulting company.” [Click here](http://www.creativecirclemedia.com/) to learn more about everything Creative Circle is up to these days.

So, the list of opportunities for The Intern continues to grow. Make sure to visit our Intern page and download your application. Deadline is July 16. Many thanks to Bill and the Creative Circle group for joining us.

Updated: There is no “but…” any longer. Red Rock is officially sold out on Saturday night. If you’re coming to Vegas early, we suggest you look at staying elsewhere and heading out to Red Rock on Sunday. The closest casino hotel is the [Suncoast](http://www.suncoastcasino.com/reservations) which is a couple miles away. They’re showing a good Saturday night rate of $140. There is also a nearby [J.W. Marriott](http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/lasjw-jw-marriott-las-vegas-resort-spa-and-golf/) with room rates for that Saturday night of $215-296. Otherwise, there are many other hotel rooms in town. If you have a question or want advice, feel free to e-mail site chair Bill Gaspard at bill.gaspard@lasvegassun.com.

We have sold double our room block at the hotel for Friday and Saturday nights before the Workshop. If you call the hotel and book by phone you will be told that we’re sold out those nights and not be able to get a room. We are, in fact, sold out. We’ll try and negotiate more rooms for those two days. In the meantime, if you book online [click here for our hotel booking page](http://www.sndvegas.com/practical/reserve-hotel/) you can still book for those two nights. I don’t know when the hotel will discover this and shut it down, but we recommend that if you’re thinking about coming a day or two early that you book online. Now. And that’s especially true for the board members who haven’t signed on but need to be here for a Saturday meeting.

Coming aboard to join our already excellent line up (internships at The St. Petersburg Times, Arizona Republic, Dallas Morning News and Hartford Courant; fellowships at The Poynter Institute) is The Boston Globe. The Globe was the host of last year’s Workshop and arranged an ambitious Intern competition. Kristin Lenz did a terrific job that awed us. While this year’s competition is considerably simpler, we still wanted to match last year’s stellar lineup of participating organizations. With the Globe joining us (and more to come) we’re well on our way.

The Globe has been a worldwide industry leader in design since the 1980s. A perennial top winner in the Best of Newspaper Design, the Globe tied for 4th with the St. Petersburg Times with 37 awards in last year’s competition.

So, the list of opportunities for The Intern continues to grow. Make sure to visit our Intern [page](http://www.sndvegas.com/students/the-intern/) and download your application. Deadline is July 16. Many thanks to Dan Zedek and the crew at the Globe for taking part again.

Thinking about adding a couple days on the front end of the Workshop for a little Vegas R&R? You should book your hotel now. We are at our room block limit for Friday night and well over our room block for Saturday night.

For the actual Workshop nights (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday), we’re fine. No need to hurry if you’re planning to come for those nights or later in the week.

At the moment, if you phone in your reservation operators will tell you we’ve exceeded our room block for Friday/Saturday. However, we’re finding you can still book for those nights if you use the [online booking system](http://www.sndvegas.com/practical/reserve-hotel/).

We are working with the hotel to increase our room block for those nights. And we’ll very likely get some extra rooms. But it looks like the “come early” half of the “come early, stay late” equation is pretty popular.

We’ll post additional information about the hotel as we confirm additional rooms and get more information on registration patterns. Watch this space.

Yes, students, we will have a version of [The Intern at SNDVegas](http://www.sndvegas.com/students/the-intern/)!

And we’re sorry we’re so late in getting this information out.

But the good news is, the application process is considerably simpler — as is the entire selection process. [View the full details and download this year’s application](http://www.sndvegas.com/students/the-intern/).

After a couple of wonderfully elaborate contests in Orlando and Boston, we’re taking a low-key approach in Vegas.

We’re doing that partly because the timing of this Workshop makes it impossible for a number of students to attend (we’re the first week of classes for many schools). And partly because the media economy is in tough shape this year.

But for everyone who can come, we’re opening the process to many more students. Now, every student who applies and shows up for the free student workshop on Sunday can participate in the first two rounds of the competition.

You do not have to register for the professional workshop to participate, but you do have to find your way to Vegas on Sunday, Sept. 7 to be considered. And you must send in an application prior to the workshop. If you’re still not sure if you can be here, you have until July 16 to have the application to us.

So far, we have two paid internships for either juniors or seniors — one with The Arizona Republic and the other with the St. Petersburg Times. We will announce additional participants over the summer. It’s too early in the budget cycle for some papers to make a commitment.

In addition, Poynter is offering three multimedia fellowships for graduating seniors that run from the first week of June to the third week of July. The $3500 tuition (which includes lodging and meals) will be waived.

And we’re planning to put together a job fair to bring you, the potential employees, together with potential employers in a mini job fair after the official “interns” are chosen. So even if you don’t win, you still have a good chance of leaving with a job.
