As budgets grow ever tighter, we’re offering more sessions for your money than ever before. Below are the more than 60 sessions planned for the main days of the Workshop.

And remember, your SND registration gets you into any APME or APPM session that doesn’t include a meal.

    • Explore the multimedia landscape to tell a story with text, visuals and data. Now design that story in one seamless experience in a simple interface. Oh, and make it flexible enough to allow last-minute changes and updates. We explore case studies from The New York Times and some outside-the-box thinking.

  • Summerlin E: Near-death experience

    • Set to close, a paper rethinks itself and gains new readers and a new life. This is the story of Svenska Dagbladet, a 124-year-old daily that converted from broadsheet to tabloid in 2000 and had to do its homework all over again. The rethink made SvD a role model for many Nordic newspapers.

  • Summerlin F: Find your comfort (and joy) as a leader

    • What is this thing called leadership? Do you sometimes find yourself at a loss to deal with everyday challenges? Do you wonder when to make demands and when to let things go? Do you suspect your bosses like you more than your staff does? Does that matter? We’ll discuss the moves that every decent leader makes – and the extra steps the most powerful leaders take.

    • Kimberly Elam is a writer, educator and graphic designer and is currently the chair of the Graphic + Interactive Communication Department at the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Fla.
  • Summerlin E: Sailing across the Atlantic: How to get the readers aboard?

    • What’s the best way to tell an adventure from the middle of nowhere? How can you catch an audience and get them to follow along? We explore different story forms in German media, including a case study of a regatta diary at Welt Online.

  • Summerlin F: Small papers, big results

    • The news for our industry has been flooded with stories of downsizing and revenue loss. But the news for our industry isn’t all bad – in fact, small-market newspapers and weeklies are doing better than ever. Learn how design can provide big results for a small paper.

    • Dale Peskin knows where you’re going. He sees your future. Standing between revolutions and life, he takes you on a creative journey from Flatland to the Right Bank of the Brain to the Elastic Society — places where designers negotiate change and innovation. Peskin shows how designers give life and voice to objects, and along the way, manifest visions and aspirations, including those we do not yet know we have.
    • Dale Peskin is co-founder and managing director of iFOCOS, the media think tank and futures lab.
    • Part poet, storyteller, and writer, Rives designs interactive narratives for grown-ups.

  • Pavilion Ballroom: Designing for the future Web

    • The hype around Web 2.0 continues to increase to the point of absurdity. But what can we learn from these trends to actually apply to our Web sites? We’ll take a tour through the past, present and future of the Web to answer these questions and more.
    • Jeffrey Veen is one of the founding partners of Adaptive Path and project lead for Measure Map.
  • Veranda AB: Stories from the wet-brush crowd

    • Six veteran newspaper illustrators who work primarily in conventional, old-school wet media. An open forum for questions, the panel will be a conversation about the successes and challenges for a daily newspaper illustrator, supported by examples.
    • Chris Morris, art director, Las Vegas Sun, leads a panel that includes Stacy Innerst (Pittsburgh Post- Gazette), Susan Jouflas (The Seattle Times), Ted Crow (The Plain Dealer), Michael Hogue (The Dallas Morning News) and Guillermo Munro (Gulf News)
  • Veranda C: The psychology of design

    • Knowing the theory behind what you do on a daily basis can greatly increase your creativity, speed and the quality of your pages.
    • Darren Sanefski is the assistant art director / sports designer at The Syracuse Post-Standard.
  • Veranda DE: Rethinking yourself as a freelancer

    • Do you dream of working in pajamas with a view of the Eiffel Tower? Are rumors of downsizing about to come true? In this golden age of cutbacks and layoffs, find out what it takes to make it on your own. If you are thinking about setting sail under your own flag, or a manager interested in harnessing this talent, this session is for you.
    • Linda Eckstein is an information-design consultant. The former Fortune graphics editor is based in New York City.
    • Therese Shechter is a New-York based filmmaker.
  • Siena: Tackling Adobe Production Premium CS3

    • Learn how to complete an end-to-end workflow for video production with the industry standard After Effects, Photoshop Extended and Premiere Pro.
    • Kevan O’Brien, solutions engineer for Creative Solutions, has been a film and video production expert with Adobe since 2003.

    • Go behind the scenes with the Los Angeles Times and msnbc.com and learn the secrets that can help you produce top-quality projects in print and online.
    • Paige West is the director of interactive projects at msnbc.com.
    • Michael Whitley is an assistant managing editor at the Los Angeles Times.
  • Veranda AB: World’s Best: Akzia

    • How a group of 20-somethings from a free Russian newspaper for young readers managed to get SND’s biggest design award. Akzia’s history, team, ideas and pages.
    • Svetlana Maximchenko is editor-in-chief of Akzia and other Mass Media company’s publications.
    • Ksenia Vekshina is art director of Akzia Newspaper and the company’s other publications.
  • Veranda C: Rethinking your typography

    • As papers get smaller, type families get larger. More weights and widths are needed to keep newspapers clean and tidy, like the design of a boat’s interior. When space is limited, design elements must be well considered.
    • Sam Berlow oversees day-to-day operations at Font Bureau.
  • Veranda DE: Corralling that sports special project

    • Sometimes getting a special project out the door successfully can feel a lot like herding cats. Editors want this, writers want that, photographers want another thing, different ideas fill the room and different visions collide in the designer’s lap. We show you how to make these projects (including the recently concluded Olympics) a success, from the first planning meeting to putting it on the press.

  • Siena: Understanding user behavior with Eyetracking

    • As news Web sites experiment with different storytelling methods, it is important to understand the effectiveness of each. How do users navigate online slideshows and video? How do they behave when playing interactive games? What types of home-page displays generate interest? We will review results from studies conducted by the DiSEL Research Consortium.
    • Laura Ruel, who teaches visual communication and multimedia journalism at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, leads a panel including: Tyson Evans, Lynette Holman and Kristen Novak.

  • Pavilion Ballroom: The hottest magazine design trends to avoid

    • No, no, no. Don’t make it beautiful. Don’t copy Fred Woodward. Never over art direct. Don’t make it look like embroidery. And many other hideous traps to avoid.
    • Luke Hayman is a partner in Pentagram’s New York office.
  • Veranda AB: Rethinking the redesign

    • A look at how The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s customer-focused redesign is transforming the organization from the inside out. What happens when listening to readers challenges assumptions about good newspaper design?

  • Veranda AB: Be more influential in your newsroom

    • Some people seem to easily persuade others to go along with their ideas, and others get shot down time and time again. How can you maximize your influence even if you’re outnumbered and outranked? We’ll look at some of the surprising ways you can be more persuasive every day.

    • The story of the Portugese weekly that went from broadsheet to Berliner and won SND’s top design award.

  • Veranda DE: What happened to information graphics?

    • After taking center stage in newspaper design in the 1980s, information graphics now are seen only occasionally in print, and surprising less online. We take a tour of what’s out there and talk about what can be done— particularly online.

  • Siena: Rethinking yourself as a motion designer

    • Creating stories infused with great design and motion is as much a skill as storytelling itself. Exploring process, influence and inspiration, this session will be a creative dialogue about transforming your narratives instead of conforming to a standard template and canned design.
    • Jody Sugrue is a Toronto-based designer and art director.

    • A look at Briefing, The Dallas Morning News’ new four-day-a-week free broadsheet. You’ll learn fun facts about how it was created, re-created, re-created again, then re-created a little bit some more. And you’ll see how color on every page is better than Twitter and Facebook combined. Be sure to stick around for the last 20 minutes, when we’ll have a crazy sodoku dance party DJ’ed by Briefing editor Will Pry. One of the lucky attendees will also win a 1989 Aqua Geo Metro.

    • Time-saving LightWave shortcuts to make your deadline graphics and illustrations sparkle (intermediate).
    • With the economic forecast for newspapers decidedly cloudy, we share some ideas for designing in a shrinking newshole. Paper costs money and if the money’s not there, you need some practical tips for making more from less. We’ll show you how to take any big story and land it perfectly in a smaller space.

    • The art of the honest and constructive critique. A guide to giving direction and guidance that stays positive while achieving the desired result.

  • Veranda C: Arabic design and typography

    • The Arab world — particularly the Middle East — is often in the news. But beyond the turbulent political situation is a rapidly emerging design scene, on air and in print. This is a showcase of the region, including a discussion of the relevant cultural, political and social influences.
    • Tarek Atrissi runs a Netherlands-based multidisciplinary design studio.
  • Veranda DE: Bucking the trend

    • As the economy toughens and budgets tighten, how do you maintain and improve quality with a small visual staff? We share proven strategies around Web/print integration, staff organization, collaboration, planning and look at some of the challenges we face.
    • Adrian Norris is The Globe and Mail’s managing editor for design.
  • Siena: MAPublisher and Sketchup

    • Stop locating data on a map using a phone book! MAPublisher is a powerful suite of plug-ins that bridges the gap between Geographic Information Systems and high-end graphic design. Google’s Sketchup is a free, super-easy 3-D program, quickly gaining popularity.
    • Karl Gude leads Michigan State University’s information graphics program.
    • John Allison is a journalism major at Michigan State University.

  • Pavilion Ballroom: 21 Redesigns

    • A quick look at five recent projects: 21 slides, 21 seconds each.
    • Lucie Lacava (The National in Abu Dhabi); Javier Errea (Diari de Balears in Palma de Mallorca, Spain); Bonita Burton (The Orlando Sentinel); Ally Pamer (Copenhagen’s Ekstra Bladet); and Paul Wallen (The Sun-Sentinel).
  • Veranda AB: ‘Brand Aid’

    • In today’s ever-fracturing media structure, we’re way past print and online being our only outlets to get in front of readers. You can have content a mile deep; just don’t go over 140 characters when delivering the message.
    • Chris Courtney is the design director for RedEye and the co-creator of the Chicago Tribune’s new youth tabloid, TheMash.
  • Veranda C: Discover Adobe Design Premium

    • Tips for enhancing your creativity with InDesign, Illustrator and the full CS3 suite.
    • Colin Fleming is a solutions engineer for Creative Solutions and has been a design expert with Adobe since 2004.
  • Veranda DE: The southern cross of design

    • From graphics to illustration, photography, newspaper redesign and Web content, come for a walk under the brightest stars in South America’s visual journalism skies.
    • Gustavo Lo Valvo is the design director of Clarín.
    • Cristóbal Edwards teaches visual journalism and investigative reporting at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile’s School of Journalism.
  • Siena: Building on a geographic foundation

    • Explore the changing role of location as a persistent thread in storytelling. With new dynamic tools at our fingertips, we are able to use maps in more interactive environments, allowing viewers to navigate information in new ways.
    • Jess D. Elder is georeferencing specialist for National Geographic Maps.

4:35 pm - 5:30 pm

  • Red Rock Ballroom: Joint General Session - SND/APME/APPM

    • Where do print and online design converge? Where do they stray? We asked members from SND, APME, APPM and ONA to help us make presentation decisions that take into account each format’s unique strengths —and weaknesses. Then we prototyped the results. Let the conversation begin.
    • SND Vice President, Matt Mansfield, leads a discussion with Josh Awtry, Steve Mullen, Jeff Scheid and Robert Torres.

7 – 10 p.m.

  • Red Rock Ballroom: Freedom Forum Presents: “G-Men and Journalists”

    • The FBI’s efforts to fight crime and its starring role in popular culture is the subject of The Freedom Forum’s presentation of top news stories of the FBI’s first century. The program will examine the sometimes contentious, sometimes cooperative relationship between the press and the FBI over 100 years.
    • After the presentation, you’re invited to join us at Red Rock’s Cherry Nightclub for a night of partying.
